Messi crowned Champion of Champions

French football magazine L’Equipe today released the results of its 2011 World Champion of Champions award. FC Barcelona forward Lionel Messi (24) won the epically named title ahead of an international pool of sports star nominees.

Messi received 807 points, beating rather handily the second place finisher, Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic with 699 points, and third place German Formula One racer Sebastian Vettel with 255. The title is voted on by L’Equipe editors.

This is the first time the Argentine has garnered this title and he succeeds 2010′s Champion, Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal.
