The Minister of Health, Djamel Ould Abbes, on Wednesday, has declared war on drug distributors and importers representing a threat to country’s medication security.

Mr Ould Abbes has accused what he called as “drugs tycoons” of fabricating the current scarcity in vital medicines in order to press the government succumbing to their monopoly.

He further announced reviewing all legislatives and status of the National Medicine Agency ahead of restructuring it, in order to set more control on the drug market and liberating it from the tycoons’ cartel which is behind the recurrent shortage crisis hitting the market.

The Minister of Health has further announced that the government has imported 1 million insulin unit, which is to be distributed as soon as customs duties procedures are fulfilled.

Furthermore, Mr Ould Abbes mentioned that his department has decided sending pharmacists to ports and airports in order to checkout and control all the drug loads being imported without permission and with inflated invoices, to curb the current drug scarcity. The official said his department is due to sue into justice all the offenders.
