Municipality workers resume their strike after a short truce

Nearly half a million of municipality workers will go on strike today and tomorrow to denounce their precarious socio- professional conditions, blaming the interior ministry for not addressing their demands.

  •

  • Meanwhile, preparations are underway to stage a huge protest here in Algiers during the upcoming weeks followed by a sit-in by the government palace.

  •

  • Under the aegis of the SNAPAP Union, the Committee of the Municipalities Sector has decided to resume a series of a two days protest every month as of today to express their discontent towards the relevant ministry’s reluctance to release the workers’ status and the review of their salaries.

  •

  • Moreover, the protesters have demanded the integration of 20 % of temporary workers that counts the sector and keep working with the old terms contracts.

  •

  • In a declaration made yesterday to Echourouk, the Union’s chief Ali Yahia expects the same rate of success that is 80 % nationwide, noting that the workers are bracing for a national movement crowned with a sit-in by the government palace.

  •

  • To recall, the committee has decided to momentarily freeze its protest movement over last May in a move to avoid disturbances for the parents’ students during this sensitive period of the year where millions of them pass their exams.
