National Gendarmerie:”The eradication of the terrorism scourge and the struggle against organized crime among the top priorities of this security body”.
The President of the Republic, Abdellaziz Bouteflika, has issued a new presidential decree defining the missions bestowed upon the National Gendarmerie in the relentless struggle against the heinous plague of terrorism, criminality and organized crime with the help of modern and proficient means to achieve better results on the ground.

For this constituent body, the sustained fight against the new forms of evil requires a greater availability, aptitude, coordination and steady exchanges of information as well as an optimal use of the modern means provided by the Algerian state.

A case in point is the creation of the national Institute of criminology located in Bouchaoui and the newly-created school of the judiciary police which depends on the National Gendarmerie, situated in Zeralda on the western seaboard of Algiers.

This new facility will be inaugurated shortly by the head of state.

The new presidential decree which has just been published in the official gazette, maps out the prerogatives and the missions of the National Gendarmerie as well as the complementary missions of the judiciary, administrative and military police in order to boost and consolidate their joint actions.

It should be noted that the number of National Gendarmerie elements will be hiked to 100.000 by the year 2010 in line with the new action plan.

This security body will be beefed up through the setting up of new training structures endowed with up-to-date means while keeping abreast with the changes witnessed in Algeria and elsewhere in the world.

During a recent statement made in the eastern city of Constantine, the Commander of the National Gendarmerie, Major General Boustila, urged the elements of this corporate body to show more mobilization, vigilance, professionalism and abnegation in their struggle against all forms of criminality and to put their competence at the service of the defense of the citizens, the preservation of peace and stability and the reinforcement of the rule of law in Algeria.
