New media law to be discussed at the parliament

Security forces have surrounded dozens of journalists nearby Safir hotel, downtown Algiers, and prevented them from heading for the Algerian parliament where they were about to stage a rally in order to denounce the new media law forwarded for endorsement by the parliamentarians.

• After a tug of war between the protesters and the security forces, the journalists were forced to change their itinerary toward the parking lot reserved to the members of the parliament.

• The media professionals consider that the new law will stiffen the liberty of expression “ The new media law drawn by the government doesn’t live up to the journalists’ expectations and the media sector in general”, the communiqué read.

• The protesters have indicated that the project has been devoid of all the achievements included in the previous law issued in 1990. Among them, the suppression of media supreme council that was replaced by a regulatory authority in the new law.

• For his part the minister of communication Nacer Mhel has asserted that the government is committed to guarantee the liberties including freedom of expression, considering that the new law will assure the journalists’ protection at the socio-professional level.
