New stage in Algeria municipalities management

There is a need to shift to a new stage in municapilities management in Algeria, said Algerian interior minister Dahou Ould Kablia Sunday.

  • “The step requires adaptation of law on structures, prerogatives, management and control of municipalities. This should be done in conformity to requirements and changes as part of several reforms of political, economic and social aspects,” Dahou Ould Kablia told Parliament members in Algiers.
  •
  • “Municipality capacities, decision making and efficient management should be reinforced. We should also continue thinking about the necessity of reforming local tax system, continuing training elected representatives and local administration agents. This is meant to professionalize municipalities management and improve public services,” he added.
  •
  • The minister recommended the creation of urban sectors in cities where 200,000 people or more are living. He stressed the reinforcement of current system along with provisions meant to determine management criteria of the urban sectors.
  •
  •
  • “The new draft bill suggests a major law for the city of Algiers in conformity to its status of capital,” he said.
  •
  • The interior ministry stressed the necessity to introduce obligatory training for mayors in the new draft bill. “This is meant to prepare them to accomplish their mission in the best conditions.”
  •
  •
  • He believes that the suggested changes are part of reforms “linked to national interest and promotion of women’s political rights.”
  •
  • A total of 23 municipal members including five mayors were excluded as they had been condemned by penal courts.
