Nouara Djaâfar: “17.4% of Algerian families in the throes of household violence”
The Minister delegate in charge of the family and women condition, Mrs Nouara Djaafar, has revealed that 17.4% of Algerian families are suffering from regular acts of violence in their households.
- Replying to oral questions by deputies at the national popular assembly on Thursday, Mrs Nouara Djaâfar outlined striking and alarming statistics about the myriad forms of violence meted out by husbands to their wives inside their homes.
- She indicated that 30% of women were being inflicted mental form of violence, 19% faced verbal abuse and 9.4 % others were being subjected to corporal violence by their husbands.

- The draft National Family strategy (2011-2015) will be submitted shortly to the government, Mrs Nouara Saadia Djafaâr said.
- This project focuses on various issues affecting the Algerian family, defines the prerogatives in terms of family management in the medium and long terms and fill gaps recorded particularly in the fight against social scourges,” Nouara Djaâfar affirmed recently at the presentation of this strategy to the National Council of Family and Women.
- The implementation of this overral strategy also aims to “unify” efforts to promote the Algerian family, in accordance with social change and sustainable development requirements.
