“October 17, 1961 was the day of violent repression of Algerian protesters”, said French President Emmanuel Macron.
The Algerians emigrants living in France were taking part in peaceful demonstrations against an arbitrary curfew imposed on them in the capital Paris.
“The Republic must face this recent and still burning past. This is the condition of a peaceful future with Algeria and our compatriots of Algerian origin,” he added in an official tweet on Wednesday.
As a recall, French President, Emmanuel Macron, said during his visit to Algeria in February 2017, in an interview with “Echorouk” TV News channel as he was then a candidate for French presidential polls, that “colonialism is part of French history, it is a brutal crime against humanity,” and this blunt assertion touched off widespread discontent from the French right in France.
