The protesters occupying the square of downtown Laghouat said they will not leave until local authorities evacuate the new houses granted to shanty town tenants.

“We Won’t Leave Until the Houses Are Evacuated” reads a slogan lifted by protesters, who rejected the statement recently issued by the prefect of Laghouat, “which is a flight forward attempt, as it has not clearly confirmed the expulsion of the people who were installed in the houses,” they deplored.

The protesters claim, instead, to grant the new houses to homeless teachers and doctors, while their attempt to sit in near the prefecture headquarters was foiled by a police cordon.

Meanwhile, the emissary of chief of the national police department (DGSN) to Laghouat has been listening to preoccupations of the residents and activists over abuses the protesters endured by anti riot forces working under the order of head of the prefecture security.

To recall, all the arrested protesters were released, as the prefect pledged not to sue them in justice, noting that a final report on the situation is going to be filed to the DGSN Chief, Abdelghani EL Hamel.
