Ronaldo move to Real Madrid ‘unlikely’
A SUMMER move to Real Madrid for Cristiano Ronaldo is unlikely and financially impractical, according to the agent who was at the centre of David Beckham’s move to the Spanish club in 2003.
Jon Holmes, the former managing director of SFX sports agents, and who was responsible for the former England captain’s management at the time of his move to Real, has said the chances of Ronaldo leaving Manchester United in the near future are remote.
“I don’t see it,” said Holmes, referring to the £100million offer Real are reportedly prepared to table for the Portugal international. “Ronaldo is not in that league yet, not in those terms.”
Holmes believes that Ronaldo was merely flirting with Real when he said on Thursday that he would not rule out a move to Spain. “It sounds a bit like it, doesn’t it? He was talking to foreign journalists, not British journalists, after all,” Holmes said.
He said the influence of Sir Alex Ferguson would probably ensure that Ronaldo stays put at Old Trafford. “The difference was that when Beckham went, Ferguson wanted him to go. If Ferguson doesn’t want him to go, it could be far more of a struggle,” Holmes said.
“Beckham was different, that was more about lifestyle. Ronaldo is not going to wind Ferguson up at the moment. He’s also playing at his peak. Beckham was distracted from his football.”
Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre admits he could be tempted by a move to Bordeaux, provided the French club can meet his salary demands.
“It isn’t impossible,” the 30-year-old France international, whose season has been disrupted by knee injuries, said.
“Bordeaux is a club close to my heart. When I was little, I followed their exploits in Europe.”
