Sabri Boukadoum: “There Is No Dispute Between Algeria, Spain Over The Maritime Borders”

Algeria has no aggressive policy against any of the neighbouring countries, with regard to the maritime borders, Foreign Minister, Sabri Boukadoum, said in a press conference with his Spanish counterpart, Arancha González Laya, on Wednesday.

“Algeria is a peaceful country and everything that has been promoted about the existence of problems between Algeria and Spain over the demarcation of the maritime border is a lie”.

“The decision taken by Algeria two years ago indicates that the borders are drawn after negotiations, and the news that is promoted about the existence of problems in this regard has other objectives”.

“The Treaty of the Seas gives the right for states to draw borders to 200 nautical knots, and if the distance is narrow, then the treaty gives the right to negotiations between the two countries”.

“I say and repeat, with France, Spain and Italy regarding maritime borders that are subject to the law of the sea according to the United Nations stipulating that every country has the right to demarcate its borders. There are areas that we may not agree on and this calls for mandatory negotiations”.

For its part, the Spanish Foreign Minister, Arancha González Laya, confirmed that Algeria and Spain are 100% in agreement regarding the issue of borders, and in case of a dispute, there will be negotiations to resolve it.

Foreign Minister, Sabri Boukadoum, indicated that it was agreed on bilateral cooperation between Algeria and Spain in all fields such as economic cooperation, oil and gas. I will remain in continuous contact with his Spanish counterpart Arancha Gonzalez Laya”, and he discussed with her all international issues that are related to Libya, the Sahel countries, Mali and the Mediterranean.
