Sahel region’s chiefs of staff to meet Southern Algeria
Council of chiefs of staff of Algeria, Mali, Mauritania, and Niger are holding a meeting as from today, Wednesday, at the headquarters of the 6th Military Region in Tamanrasset (southern Algerian), in the context of assessing the security situation in Sahel region and to keep pace with the measures that are taken in combating terrorism and the organized crime.
Statement of the National Defense Ministry, announced; “In the context of assessing the security situation that is prevailing in the Sahel region, according to the measures that are taken to combat terrorism and organized crime within the framework of a Common Operational Staff Committee, we hold on September 16 and 17, 2015 at the headquarters of the 6th Military Region of Tamanrasset, a meeting of the chiefs of staff of Algeria, Mali, Mauritania and Niger, under the chairmanship of the Major General, Ahmed Guaid Saleh, Vice Minister of National Defense and Army Chief of Staff”.
“Meeting is expected to witness the exchange of information and analysis that would ensure the adequate preparation for the outcome of the activities and the work that is done to initiate the embodiment of a unified strategy to combat terrorism and organized crime”.
“The meeting will also allow Algeria to deliver the Presidency of the Council of Chiefs of Staff to Mali Chief of Staff”.
This security meeting serves as a beginning for the application of Tamanrasset plan, that contained mechanisms for rapid exchange of information and joint intervention and recruitment of human and technical potential of countries, and the establishment of military communication intelligence to monitor the movement of al Qaeda funds, in order to dry up its sources, and eliminate terrorism.
Tamanrasset plan reiterated the principle of rejecting any foreign interference and relying on the region’s armies, after the end of training and armament operations, and the exchange of intelligence information, which is a confirmation of the strategic goal of Mali, Algeria, Niger and Mauritania to eradicate terrorism and al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.
