Sardinia’s Regional Government: “Algerian Illegal Immigrants Should Not Stay For More Than 90 Days”
Over 15 Algerian illegal immigrants were rescued by the Italian Coast Guard Services in Sardinia, on the shores of the island after their bodies have dried up, as politicians at the same island have stepped up their threat against the government to stop the flow of Algerian illegal immigrants to the island and announced that they do not want them to stay for more than 90 days.
Local media in Italy said the Coast Guard Services of Cagliari intervened to rescue 15 Algerian illegal immigrants near Sulcis region, where the operation was conducted in two phases, the first one noticed the rescue of 5 and the second 10 illegal immigrants.
Algerian illegal immigrants were treated due to the dryness of their bodies in view of the long sailing hours which they spent at sea, according to the same sources.
The regional government of Sardinia expressed its alarm at the continued flow of Algerian illegal immigrants on the island without Rome intervening to find a solution to this phenomenon.
The regional government, on the lips of the official in charge of public affairs, Filippo Spanu, asked for an urgent meeting with the new Interior Minister, Matteo Salvini, to study and find solutions for the continued flow of Algerian illegal immigrants on the island.
Sardinia’s regional government asserted the need for Rome to activate the scheme of shelters and deportations of Algerian secret migrants through the construction of facilities for up to 90 people, and their stay on the island’s territory is also 90 days.
Various political activities in the island have been working for months to activate the Algerian secret migrants’ shelters and expel them directly from Sardinia to Algeria, by freezing the issuance of the exit and leaving documents that enabled them to reach the Italian mainland via the ship.
In 2017, more than 2,000 Algerians reached the Italian island on board of small boats according to official statistics of the Italian authorities, while their number in early 2018 reached about 500 illegal immigrants.
The Italian authorities are currently rehabilitating a prison to turn it into a reception center for illegal immigrants, where the facility can accommodate more than 2000 people.
