There are no negotiations at the moment with the Iraqi authorities to transfer the Algerian prisoners and hand them over to the Algerian authorities, or even reach agreement on the abolition of the death sentences issued against them by the Iraqi justice, Chairman of the National Commission for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights, Farouk Ksentini, told Echorouk.

Ksentini told Echorouk that it is impossible to cancel the death sentences against the Algerian prisoners who are detained in Iraqi prisoners, and stop the abusive practices against them, due to the lack of outlets for dialogue with the Iraqi government, as well as the difficult security situation in Iraq, which hampered the efforts of the State Department and Human Rights Organizations, in order to reach a solution with regard to the extradition of Algerian prisoners in accordance with the Riyadh Convention in 1983, which provides for the exchange of prisoners between the Arab countries in the framework of judicial cooperation.
Farouk Ksentini, did not hide his fear of the implementation of the Iraqi judicial provisions for the execution of Arab prisoners, including the Algerian prisoners, especially those convicted on charges of involvement in terrorist acts, knowing that most of them were arrested on charges of entering Iraqi territory illegally.
“There is not enough data regarding the number of Algerian prisoners and their situation, given the secrecy of information by the Iraqi government.”
