Sellal salvages school year from damaging long drawn-out teachers’ strike
The National Union of the Personnel of Education and Training (UNPEF) has decided to freeze its three-week long strike in Algeria’s primary and secondary schools.
UNPEF spokesman Messaoud Amraoui confirmed the end of the teachers’ work stoppage saying that courses at the various educational centers would resume normally on Tuesday February 18th.
He indicated that such a decision had been taken after securing a favourable agreement with the Management of the civil service concerning the right to promotion for the benefit of teachers of the primary and intermediate school cycles, which was one of the main socio-professional claims upheld by the UNPEF.
The open-ended strike action was launched in late January by three autonomous education Unions including the “UNPEF”, the “SNAPEST” and the extended “CNAPEST”.
This salutary breakthrough was finally achieved thanks to the second intervention in a row of Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal who issued instructions to the relevant authorities to finally come to terms with the three striking Unions in order not to jeopardize this year’s school year to the detriment of the helpless pupils.
