A draft decree about the position of the Republic’s Mufti shows that its missions are sensitive as it is about following up media and culture production. This comes as the president did not accept it while the religious affairs ministry did not defend it enough, according to officials.

The draft text includes 36 articles mentioned in three chapters: appellation, objective, headoffice; organization and management and board of directors.

Former press attaché at the ministry Ada Fellahi said reasons behind the promulgation of the text are based on serving religious reference. The ministry insists on obliging mosques to respect it and end disputes over religious issues.

“The ministry wants to catch up the situation to avoid extremism which was experienced by Algeria in the 1990’s. It also wants to promote religious executives’’ level and offer the best service to people,” he told Echorouk.

He added that the ministry put a legal, structural and religious framework for fatwas but the president may not be convinced by the personality which would hold the position of the Republic’s Mufti.
