Slums will not be eradicated in 2014, minister says

The Algerian housing minister Noureddine Moussa has indicated that the government’s plan to eradicate slums in the country will not succeed without the commitment of all parties including the citizens.

• Some 380 thousand new housing units were built to eradicate 553 thousand units that count the slums across the country, including 180 thousand in the southern provinces, the minister further added.

• M Moussa has also noted that the authorities have planned to eradicate the phenomenon by the year 2014, but various factors spoiled the operation.

•  

• The minister put it clear that “ The authorities will not yield to the pressure of the protests warning some malevolent citizens that erect shacks in order to benefit from a new house”.
