Solar energy plan fails to reach objectives in southern Algeria
Despite tremendous efforts deployed by the national gas and electricity company “ Sonelgaz†to provide the remote villages scattered in the southern provinces with energy, the results are still well under expectations due to various acts of sabotage.

-
The company has conducted a vast plan over the last few years which consists in lighting these areas with solar energy with the aim to cover the needs of some 1000 families across the four provinces located in far south Algeria.

Other companies operating in the hydrocarbons sector like the Algerian “ SONATRACH” and the British “ British Petroleum” have joined their efforts alongside Sonelgaz to supply some remote villages with electricity but the outcome didn’t live up to the expectations.

-
Lack of appropriate maintenance plan for the different equipment and the absence of skilled personnel to take care of them have spoiled the authorities’ objectives.
-
-
On the other hand, various acts of sabotage and burglary have been carried out by smugglers who garner staggering sums out of the equipment they sell in the nieghboring countries like Mali and Niger .
