Sonatrach and Fertiberia sign contract to build new ammonia plant in Algeria

Algeria’s state-owned oil company Sonatrach concluded a partnership contract Monday with Fertiberia SA, Spain's largest maker of fertilizers to build an ammonia plant in the western city of Oran worth 315 million euro.

Officials at the Spanish company said chemical fertilisers sector in Algeria is very promising in view of agricultural projects size and increasing demands for agricultural products in the country.

They added that the project would turn the Spanish company into the second largest chemical fertilisers group in Europe. The new complex, with a capacity to produce 1.1 million metric ton of ammonia a year is one of the most four fertilisers ones due to be built in western Algeria.

For his part Sonatrach’s CEO Mohamed Meziane said the four complexes will enhance Algeria’s position in the world in terms of chemical fertilisers.

The United States of America and the European Union are the most important markets for Algerian exports of fertilisers.
