CEO of the state run electricity and gas company Sonelgaz, Noureddine Bouterfa, has stated that exporting solar power to Europe remain the main goal of the firm, calling European countries to cooperate in achieving such a goal.

Mr Bouterfa has been quoted by Algerian Radio as saying that “some requirements have to be  gathered in order to achieve the goal of exporting this clean energy,” stressing that “those who are in need of solar power have to remove all constraints in order to generate the required budget to launch this project.”

Practically, Mr Bouterfa explained that “transferring solar power to Europe should be done via Spain and Italy, but the problem is that these two countries’ local power networks are overloaded,” adding that “So, there’s a technical problem hindering exporting electricity to Europe.”

Meanwhile, Sonelgaz CEO added that “We have managed setting up a Mediterranean association for power transferors, which is to be active sooner.”

He revealed however the existence of a study aiming at examining the possibility of integrating the Maghreb electricity market in that of Europe.
