Terrorist bombing targeted municipal guards east of Algiers
Tizi Ouzou(east of Algiers)-A group of terrorists active in the forest of Tighzirt targeted the new headquarters of the Municipal Guards in Chria on Thursday night.

- Al-Qa’ida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) continued to pose a significant threat in Algeria in 2010. AQIM operatives in Algeria have stated their intention to overthrow the Algerian government and attack Algerian, French, Spanish, and American targets.
- The government of Algeria launched a major military campaign against AQIM in the fall of2010. The campaign resulted in hundreds of arrests and numerous terrorist causalities.
- The operation, however, did not result in the arrest or neutralization of Abdelmalek Droukdal, the Algerian leader of AQIM. Drug and weapon smuggling remained the main criminal problemsin Algeria outside of terrorism in 2011.
- Additionally, authorities dismantled several moneycounterfeiting rings in the northeastern part of the country. Social unrest was a major challenge for the Algerian governmment in 2010.
- The frequency andintensity of localized, sporadic, and usually spontaneous civil disturbances rose some 300% incomparison to 2009, reaching a crescendo in early 2011 with nationwide riots that madeinternational headlines. Riots in 2010 resulted in countless arrests, hundreds of police officerinjuries, scores of deaths, and considerable loss of government and private property. Theearly January riots across Algeria suggest that violent social unrest, local and nationwide, willcontinue to be a security concern in Algeria in 2011.
