“The future of the Arab Maghreb depends on the opening of Algerian-Moroccan borders”, says Moroccan official

The Moroccan ministry of communication and government’s spokesman Khaled Ennasri has declared that his country has always resorted to official channels when dealing with the opening of the borders between the 2 countries, and that Rabat didn’t use other channels. This statement comes as a response to the Algerian Prime Minister’s declarations who said that the border problem will not be resolved through press releases.

• Talking the day before yesterday to the press,  Khaled Ennasri has indicated that Morocco didn’t spare any opportunity to call for the re-opening of the borders closed since 1994 but the Algerian government, he said, “ look for excuses to call on the western countries to reconsider their position as concerns its territorial unity and the Western Sahara issue”

• He added “ Morocco will still open to its brotherly country Algeria, because he considers that the future of the Arab Maghreb will necessarily cross through the re-opening of the countries between the two countries”. He added” The borders are open at the Moroccan side but closed from the Algerian part only”

• According to sources, the Moroccan side are pressing the Algerian president Abdelaziz Bouteflika pending the upcoming elections to open again the borders in order to refurbish his image as a man who did his best to “cleanse” the Arab and Maghreb scene since he took office in 1999.

• For his part, the leader of the National Front Liberation Party FLN Abdelaziz Belkhadem has declared on a TV broadcast that Morocco has to show a clear cooperation in fighting against terrorism, contraband and illegal immigration before talking about the re-opening of the borders.
