(TI) Corruption Index: Algeria Ranked At 88th Slot Worldwide
The latest report of Transparency International (TI) revealed that among the countries where corruption is in full swing are 9 Arab countries including Algeria.
The TI NGO based in Berlin, work out annually reports on perceptions of corruption in the public sector. It ranks countries from the most corrupt to the virtuous and rates them on a scale from 0 to 100. Its work is based on data collected by 12 international agencies including the World Bank, the African Development Bank or the World Economic Forum.
The TI survey found that 50 million people in the Middle East and North Africa regularly resort to bribes in exchange for services.
To recall, the index of perception of corruption (CPI) TI ranks countries according to the perceived level of corruption in government and the political class.
It is a composite index, a poll of polls, using data on corruption obtained from expert surveys conducted by various independent organizations.
It reflects views from around the world, including those of experts who live in the countries evaluated.
The TI CPI focuses on corruption in the public sector and defines corruption as the abuse of public office for personal enrichment.
The surveys used in compiling the CPI ask questions relating to the abuse of official power for personal gain (i.e bribery of public officials, bribery in connection with public procurement, embezzlement of public funds) or questions that probe the strength of policies against corruption, thereby encompassing administrative corruption and political corruption.
Furthermore, in this report, over 61% of citizens in these 9 countries believe that the CPI is clearly growing, with 26% of Algerians. And thus Algeria has been rated 36 out of 100 to be classified in 88th place out of 168 countries worldwide.
The report also showed that the governments of the Middle East and North Africa have failed to weed out corruption at a time when they continue to suppress the voice of citizens, with 45% of them believing that government officials, tax officials, parliamentarians are the most corrupt and the other 31-41% believe that most judges and police elements are corrupt as well.
