Tons Of Algerian Dates Piled Up In Warehouses Due To The Closure Of Ports, Airports
The Algerian Exporters Association criticized the absence of planes and containers to transport tons of Algerian dates to about 63 countries contracting with Algerian dealers and said that it takes 15 days to win a container at the port level, while the absence of air cargo flights to Germany, Russia and other countries that import dates from Algeria, and its restriction to France And a few countries, which threatens the depletion of the Algerian product and pawns the program to attract $ 100 million at the end of next December.
In this context, the president of the National Association of Algerian Exporters, Ali Bey Nasri, spoke about many obstacles facing the Algerian exporters, including the absence of flights abroad in airports and containers in ports, which causes the accumulation of tens of tons of dates destined for export and required by 63 countries, saying, “There are few flights to transport exported dates, although we were able to register orders from 63 countries, most of the flights are only destined for Paris, which puts exporters today in an embarrassment”.
“Air Algérie company, and despite its confirmation of providing 6 planes to transport Algerian exports of dates, vegetables, fruits and other goods, but the programming of some flights keep tens of thousands of tons of goods ready for export awaiting the availability of a flight towards the specified destinations. There are export agreements to Russia, Canada, Morocco, Germany and other countries. However, most of the flights today, despite their small number, are heading to France, which does not meet the exporter’s requests”, he added.
Ali Bey Nasri also complained about an acute shortage of containers as a result of the Corona crisis and the acquisition of the largest exporter and importer in the world, China, which has the highest percentage of containers. Today, the Algerian product destined for export is mortgaged, as the exporter waits 15 days before taking advantage of the container, which largely hinders the export operation, although Algeria today ranks third in the production of dates and ninth in export, and by the year 2025 it aspires to reach the first place.
According to the spokesman, Algeria exported in 2020, $ 55 million of dates, and expects to raise dates export to $ 100 million, if the exporters are granted the necessary facilities, knowing that exports today are equivalent to 1.15 million tons.
“The cost of the plane today is not considered an obstacle for the exporter, which is equivalent to DZD 40 per kilogram, after benefiting from state support, as the price before the subsidy was equivalent to DZD 80 per kilogram”.
The president of the Algerian Exporters Association, Ali Bay Nasri, confirmed the necessity of granting exporters, whether in the dates or vegetables and fruits, represented today primarily in potatoes, onions, carob and red watermelons, or even exporters of other industrial products, facilities and incentives in the field of exchange by enabling them to benefit from the equivalent of 50% of the added value achieved by the importer in hard currency, which is a legitimate right that is supposed to be met soon.
