Torrential rains kill one in Algiers
The inhabitants of the slum of Bech Djerrah, Algiers suburbs, lived a nightmare in the wake of the overflow of the river that runs through the day before yesterday, causing the death of a 52 year old man while trying to rescue the other families.

The 130 families that live by the banks of this river live the same situation each year during the winter season, but the local authorities didn’t react and contented themselves with void promises despite the precarious conditions in which these families live since years.

At 5.30 pm, the inhabitants moved to the police station in order to inform them about the necessity to call the firemen to avoid the catastrophe. Houses located by the banks were completely inundated after water level rose above limit.

The tragedy has outraged the inhabitants who took to the street and blocked traffic as a reaction against the laxity of the local authorities that caused death of one of them.

Echouorouk met the victim’s wife who was completely overwhelmed by the death of her husband and told us” Although our house is located far from the banks of the river, my husband didn’t hesitate to assist disaster families and drifted away by the rushing waters”.

The mayor of the municipality has indicated that a plan is underway to dislodge the families and eradicate the slum soon.
