Traffic accidents kill 3600 Algerians in 10 months

Algiers- Figures by the General Command of the National Gendarmerie and the national security services show a high death toll caused by traffic accidents, during the first ten months of 2011.

The same services said that traffic accidents reach more than 21.000 at the national level, causing the death of more than 3600 people and injuring 38.000.

The first lieutenant of the communication cell at the national gendarmerie, Wahiba Boumediene, explained that the units of gendarmerie inspected, during the first ten months of 2011, 21.520 traffic accidents, across various localities, leading to the death of 3600 people.

The national gendarmerie attributed the causes of these accidents to the lack of control by drivers, as a first and principal cause, the excessive speed with 4600 cases, dangerous overtaking with 2100 cases and indifference of pedestrians with 1777 are other important causes of accidents.

For its part, the General Directorate of the National Security counted in its weekly report 346 traffic accidents in many urban areas, leading to the death of 11 people, and wounding other 418 in one week.

Traffic accidents noticed a significant rise from 151, to 180 since15 days before. This dangerous increase led one death in each hour.

Algeria ranks third at the global level in terms of the number of fatal accidents, due to these alarming figures.

Services of civil protection said there are many reasons which led to the rise of the “Road Terrorism”       phenomenon, such as the lack of public lighting, lack of traffic signals at the national level, and the significant lack of training for drivers.

Figures by the cell of national security show that, 11 people die every day, and 150 others get injured due to traffic accidents in various Algerian localities.

Algeria ranks third after Morocco and France in terms of global traffic accidents.
