The United Nations (UN) Tuesday criticized health situation in Algeria as there is a lack of sexual care for teenagers, homosexuality and prostitution are forbidden.

A UN expert said health care for teenagers is not suitable and does not meet their needs. Sexual information are missing as many sex-related issues are still considered as taboo in Algeria.

He told a press conference that Algerian makes efforts to fight AIDS and ensure treatment for homosexuals, prostitutes, drug addicts and immigrants.

“There is a need for fighting discrimination against those people and stop stigmatizing their acts. Legal and professional discrimination has a negative impact on health care,” he added.

The expert was on a two-week visit to Algeria. He visited many health facilities and mental health centers in Algiers, Blida, Djelfa, Setif, Tipaza and Oran.

He hailed Algeria for its achievement to improve health situation but he called for ore efforts so that no one would be deprived of health care.
