UN Security Council resolution banning payment of ransoms for terrorist groups

Algeria has used all its diplomacy to convince the permanent members of the UN Security Council to pass this resolution, after relentless efforts to raise awareness among the international community as to the necessity to incriminate such practices.

The Algerian authorities have succeeded to convince the UN Security Council members through a long process of negotiations starting with the United States, the United Kingdom and Russia as part of an international cooperation over the fight against terrorism and the eradication of all sources of financing.

The UN Security Council has at last resorted to condemn the payment of ransoms to terrorist groups operating under “Al Qaeda” or “Taliban movement”, which use hostages as a money exchange to finance their criminal activities all over the world.
