Workers’ party leader says Algerians would take to the street if elections rigged

The Secretary General of the Workers’ party said the National Popular Assembly (first house of the parliament) that Algeria will have after the coming legislative elections, will be a constituent assembly because it will pave the way for the Algerian second republic with a new constitution.

Louisa Hanoune focused in her questions and answers session with Echorouk journalists in their forum on the necessity for the elections to be transparent and fair in order to present a lawful to Algerians, ‘’A parliament that can bear responsibilities facing its members’’ said Hanoune to the forum. Fair and transparent elections go through the commitment of the president of the republic himself.   . 

The transparent from of the ballots decided by the government for the next elections is not sufficient. The international observers will also be less than what is awaited to guarantee fair and transparent elections. The president and the populations can guarantee this. Hanoune also say representatives from participating political parties to take place as members in the electoral commissions designed to guarantee elections within poling stations.

Louisa Hanoune did not miss the opportunity to raise her deep concerns about the possibility to see the next elections rigged. ‘’Only the president of the republic and through his prerogatives can guarantee fair elections’’ said Hanoune referring to latest promises given by president Bouteflika at the Dec 18th Council of Ministers and his call for free and transparent elections. “. 

Hanoune also threatened with a call for demonstrations if the coming elections are rigged. ‘’We did not want to speak in 1997, 2002 and 2007 because of the country’s political juncture. But we will no longer shut our mouths in the future because any fraud will give the opportunity to foreign parties to be involved in Algeria’s internal politics’’ said Hanoune.
