1,100 archaeological pieces recovered in Algeria

The National Gendarmerie forces seized 1,100 archaeological pieces and ancient coins in Ghardaia province (west of Algiers) dating back to pre-history, according to experts.

• The pieces belong to an antiques seller in Ghardaia. He displays ancient items at fewer prices compared to their real values, sources told Echorouk.
• Investigators inspected the shop and found 1,100 pieces including paintings, coins, two Roman and Numidian statues and ceramic utensils.
• Experts examined the seized pieces and found out that they are original and date back to pre-history and the Roman era.
• The shop keeper, 80, was released on bail. He told investigators he did not know about the source of the archaeological pieces, saying he bought them from antique dealers.
• Figures show that the National Gendarmerie forces have seized 4,527 pieces including 1,031 archaeological pieces and 96 ancient coins. Attempts to smuggle 250 pieces by foreign nationals were foiled in 2008.
