11,000 economic operators banned in Algeria

Algeria’s taxes general department, trade ministry and customs will ban 11,000 economic operators from any commercial activities for tax evasion.

  • The operators are included in the black list of tax evaders. Money collected from taxes was estimated at 1,220 billion DZ in 2008.
  • This sum was collected after the ministry of finance had obliged banks to submit all operators’ documents to tax inspectors.
  • The ministry warned the banks of not submitting the data to tax inspectors for any reason. The new tax law gives tax agents the right to consult all operators’ accounts as part of an inspection strategy.
  • Operators’ wives and children are also included in the inspection process as many operators conduct commercial transactions in the name of their relatives to evade taxes.
  • The ministry obliged tax inspectors to not limit their work on documents submitted by operators but also on their banking accounts.
  • Inspection commissions of the tax general department started using new ways based on “tips” to prevent operators of tax evasion. They have also adopted surprise inspection as part of the fight against tax evasion.
