1154 fires destroy 10.000 hectares in 37 localities

The General Directorate of Forests recorded, as the latest poll, 1154 fires in 37 localities out of 40 forest areas, as flames destroyed 10282 hectares of forests, as well as siege of thousands of citizens living along the forests and displacement of hundreds.

  • The Ministry of Health and Population ordered the health departments of the southern regions and coastal areas to deploy crews of the urgencies and initial aid to deal with the cases of bottlenecks and catalepsies due to the high temperature.
  • “High temperatures in the various regions of the country since the beginning of mid-July contributed to the high number of fires, because they did not exceed 2000 hectares of the forests since the beginning of June to 13 July, however, once the high temperature record of degrees the number of fires increased everyday, that’s why the number of scorched forests increased to 8.000 hectares during the period from 13 to late July. The final figures recorded 1154 fires which devoured over 10282 hectares.
  • Flames surrounded thousands of citizens living along the forests in 37 localities, particularly in the central and eastern Algeria. Ain Defla, west of Algiers, is on top of the list of the localities mosly subjected to fires with more than 93 fires, then Blida, west of Algiers, with 90 fires, Tiapza, 78 fires, and Tizi Ouzou and Boumerdes, east of Algiers, with 70 fires. While the central regions recorded the highest percentage of losses with more 55% of the total forest areas that were destroyed by fires, then the eastern areas, then the western ones. The Civil Protection Directorate did not count the total number of families who have been surrounded by flames or those who were displaced; however, informed sources told Echorouk that they are thousands.
  • 932 guards are monitoring over 4 million and 100.000 hectares over 374 control towers, as well as deployment of 473 teams of intervention containing of 2158 guards in order to explore the areas of fires and to try to extinguish them before intervention of the civil protection services which are equipped with heavy materials.
  • For its part, the Health Ministry sent instructions to the directors of health in the 14 coastal areas to recruit teams of the emergencies to ensure treatment of bottlenecks and catalepsies that are the results of high temperatures, particularly among the elderly and people living with chronicle diseases, as well as launching awareness campaign to avoid sunstrokes and heat waves.
  • The directorate of forests also deployed imams and preachers particularly in the countryside and forests areas.
