1,500 students, 4,000 smugglers arrested in Algeria, says report

Knife crime and theft are the most perpetrated crimes by Algerians in summer while prostitution and sexual assaults come third after offenses against public morality, a new security report finds.

  • Drug smuggling comes in the top of organised-related cases followed by trafficking and arms dealing, bombs smuggling along with illegal immigration.

  • According to the report, a total of 955 people were arrested in June-July-August for offenses against public morality. Some 790 were arrested for being involved in organised crime-related cases. Most of them are drug smugglers.

  • Another report released by the National Gendarmerie says about 43,000 people were arrested during the last eight months for being involved in drug smuggling, theft, counterfeiting, abduction and rape. Of them, 1,500 are women and more than 2,000 are children.

  • A total of 7,000 workers and 3,000 civil servants are involved in counterfeiting, national economy crimes and smuggling. About 1,500 students were arrested for offenses against public morality and organised crimes.

  • Figures show that the National Gendarmerie forces have seized more than 48 tons of drugs since February.

  • About 1.7 billion DZ of fake national currency have been seized since February in the provinces of Mostaghanem and Ain Timouchent (west of Algiers).

  • The National Gendarmerie treated 647 bombs smuggling-related cases and arrested 742 suspects involved in coordinating between terrorist groups and criminal networks.
