21 illegal immigrants die in Libya coasts
At least 21 illegal immigrants were killed and tens others were reported missing after their ship had sunk in Libya’s coasts.The ship was carrying more than 275 illegal immigrants heading for Italy. Libyan coast guards rescued 23 immigrants of African and Arab nationalities. Some of them come from North Africa while the whereabouts of more than 200 illegal immigrants are not known.Libyan officials say two other ships sunk after the wind had swept them off. They did not mention the number of the victims on the ships.Reprsentative of illegal immigrants’ families in Annaba province (east of Algiers) told Echorouk a set of ships had recently left the province for Italy.Observers believe illegal immigration is on the rise in the current months because weather conditions are favourable. “Tens of illegal immigrants want to reach Malta or the Italian island Lampedusa. Yet, most of them failed and die in the sea.
