300,000 people have rare blood type in Algeria

A total of 300,000 people in Algeria have blood group O- while 385,000 blood donors were found with HIV virus, according to Blood National Agency chief.

  • “Only 10 percent of the Algerian people have blood group O-. That means 300,000 Algerians will be at risk if they have an accident,” Kamel Kezal told Echorouk.
  • “A total of 40 percent of people in Algeria have blood group O+ while 30 percent have A+. Some 15 percent have blood group B+,” he added.

  • 55,000 Algerians can not donate blood

  • Blood National Agency chief said some 55,000 people in Algeria can not donate blood because they suffer from chronic diseases.
  • He also said around 400,000 people donate blood every year. “That means 200,000 litres per year.”
  • According to Kezal, Algeria is ranked second in Africa for blood donating after South Africa.
  • He said the agency signed an agreement with the cars national manufacturer to get 24 trucks for blood collection.
  • “It is necessary to have one truck in each province in the country.”
