3,265 foreign medicines registered in Algeria
French, Jordanian, Italian, Spanish and Swiss medicine companies dominate more than 70 percent of the Algerian market in terms of quantity with a total of 3,265 medicines registered between 1997 and December 2008, a new report finds.

French laboratories have the lion’s share of the Algerian market with 1,565 medicines out of the total amount of 4,766, the Algerian health ministry said.

A total of 90 percent of the French medicines are original and refundable compared to the Algerian medicines estimated at 1,501.

According to the report, French, Italian, Spanish, German, Swiss, Dutch, British, Austrian and Portuguese laboratories produce 2,523 medicines in Algeria. Arab laboratories produce 686 medicines. Of them, 371 are of Jordan followed by Saudi, Syrian, Moroccan, Tunisian, Egyptian, Emirati and Palestinian laboratories.

US, Chinese, Indian and South African laboratories produce 375 medicines, said the report.

Algeria’s health authorities continue to not imposing any conditions on medicines and pharmaceutical products registration process. The foreign laboratories seized the opportunity to register the largest possible number of medicines and Pharmaceutical products.

On the other hand, European and Arab countries decided to ban the Algerian medicines by imposing administrative hindrances.
