40,000 tons of fruit and vegetables damaged due to high prices
Vegetables and fruit price have fallen compared to the first days of the fasting month of Ramadan while white and red meat price was maintained. A total of 40,000 tons of fruit and vegetables have become damaged due to their high prices.
Prices started falling as demand decreased compared to supply. Tomatoes price fell to 60 DZ compared to 90 DZ on the first day of Ramadan. Beans are now sold at 120 DZ compared to 200 DZ.
Potatoes price is between 35 and 45 DZ and carrots are sold at 40 DZ compared to 80 DZ. Onions, lettuce, peaches and apples price are 40, 70, 50 and 70 DZ respectively.
A large number of sellers told Echorouk, fruit and vegetables price decreased by the half due to low demand compared to previous days.
This comes as lamb is sold at 1,400 DZ and beef at 1,200 DZ and chicken at 370 DZ although the government eased tax procedures.
According to spokesman for the Union of Traders and Craftsmen Taher Boulenouar, it is normal that prices fall as demand decreased compared to the first days of Ramadan.
“A total of 40,000 tons of fruit and vegetables were damaged due supply abundance compared to low demand,” he told Echorouk.
