500 illegal immigrants besieged by demonstrators in Greece

Algerian illegal immigrants were besieged by Greeks in an abandoned building downtown Athens, asking the authorities of their country to deport them from Greece, while the same city noticed popular demonstrations by the right supporters who demanded the regularization of these illegal immigrants’ status on humanitarian grounds.

  • The number of illegal immigrants reached 500, mostly from Maghreb nationalities including Algerians and Tunisians, who were inside an abandoned building of eight floors, which was previously a court in Athens.
  •
  • The illegal immigrants are living in difficult circumstances, because there is no water and electricity.
  •
  • The case of deporting illegal immigrants caused strong confrontation between Nazi Greeks and left-wing groups as well as non- governmental human rights organizations, supported by illegal immigrants from the other side, leaving 14 injured from both sides, particularly after police intervention which used force to break up the clashes.
  •
  • The incident came after the rally of about 300 member of a group calling itself the “Golden Dawn”, which contain new Nazis in Amonia square demanding “liberation of Athens from gangs of the illegal immigrants”.
  •
  • The Greeks were lifting banners demanding departure of illegal immigrants from Greece, a banner read “Foreigners equivalent of criminals”.
