No French nationality for Algerians before they give up their original one
France’s Senate presented a new draft law mainly targeting Algerians. It aims at ending the process of attributing nationality for foreigners.
The draft bill was deposited at the Senate’s legal affairs commission on February 24th. It says having dual nationality is optional and citizens can give up their second citizenship.
The document is meant to push dual citizens to make a clear choice, ie. To be part of the French national community.
It proposes to give a year-deadline for French born children from foreign parents to choose between French or their native nationality. French born children who have parents belonging to the European Union are not concerned by the procedure.
