Algeria: President Bouteflika deplores local administration drawbacks

The President of the Republic, Mr Abdelaziz Bouteflika has deplored the weakness in local administration in tallying with the considerable efforts made by the government to cover social demand and improve the citizens' living conditions.


  •  In a message addressed on Thursday to the National Conference on Local Development and the Citizens’ expectations, President Bouteflika stressed that this endeavour required cooperation among civil society, the local authorities and administration so as to ensure a better technical efficiency, greater social transparency and increased respect for ethics.

  • The Head of State also recommended that the question of the handling of the crisis of local finances be part of a program of modernization and overall reform municipalities.

  • President Bouteflika stressed that this would help them run local affairs in a more efficient and lasting way, with the focus on community public services.

  • Evoking the issue of youth, the Head of State indicated that the latter ought to be granted their rightful place in society while creating substantial integration factors notably in such fields as sport, culture, creativity and technical and scientific innovation.

  • The session of the National Conference on Local Development kicked off today, here in Algiers, in the presence of over 1 300 representatives of civil society, local elected officials, provincial executives and guests, including state officials.

  • The conference is the third and last stage of a series of national consultations on local development and the populations’ expectations, launched last September by the National Economic and Social Council, CNES.
