Arbitrary decisions throw hundreds families to the streets

Thousands of Algerian families found themselves in the streets even in the winter season due to arbitrary decisions taken by the local authorities and had nowhere to turn except newspapers to raise their problems in the last resort.

  •

  • The desperate victims grew helpless before the decision issued by the courts that forced them to quit homes they were living in since time immemorial. The phenomenon took alarming proportions prompting the creation of associations to defend the rights of this social.

  •

  • An association affiliated to the Algerian Human Rights League has, in this respect, been created in Algiers with the aim to assist those families. The chairman of this association, Hassen Zehoual has vehemently criticised the Algerian authorities for impeding the law that prevents the expulsion of the families in the winter season.

  •

  • He has indicated that the move existed in Algeria in the past and many countries are complying by this practice around the world. The Algerian authorities have to draw up an emergency plan in order to shelter the expulsed families in makeshift centers pending the settlement of their situation.

  •

  • Echourouk has recently met with a large number of those families that were victims of arbitrary expulsions and found themselves in the streets all of a sudden.

  •

  • Among them Mrs Bekiri Safia, a hundred percent disabled, who was expulsed along with her children two years ago following a forged document forwarded by the mayor of Staoueli to the court of Blida denying them the right to dwell in their house.
