Temporary teachers and unemployed protest
Some 600 temporary teachers from 32 provinces staged a sit-in out the president’s office in Algiers to claim permanent jobs. They say representing 45 000 teachers in the education system.
- The protesters accused the minister of education and the director general of the civil servants authority of damaging their career and preventing them from getting a permanent job after having served 10 to 14 years in schools.
- The angry teachers brandished banners calling the minister Boubakeur Benbuzid to step down and made it clear that their demands were not political.
- On the other side of the street, unemployed people joined the protesters to claim their rights for jobs and social benefits. Representatives of the protesters were allowed in the president office to hand over a claim statement.
