A liberation war not “events”

A liberation war not “events”

It is 54 years now when Algerians started a 7 year war that ousted French occupation from the North African country.

  •  It is a National Liberation Revolution for Algeria.
  • The French government has been calling it “The Events of Algeria” until 1999.Even though more a million than people lost their lives in these “Events”.
  • In 1830 the French occupation army captured Algiers. They expanded their presence gradually to the whole country. Since then Algerians started successive resistance movements.
  • Abdelkader was the first to lead an organized fight against the French to free his country. Prominent war leaders came after and followed the path.
  • They embarked on regional and limited rebellious movements to defend the population’s rights or protect them and their properties.
  • The French colonial administration in Algeria was specific. The policy and strategy implemented was different from that in neighboring countries.
  • Algerians were prevented from learning Arabic. They were not allowed to schools. Nor were they granted French citizenship.
  • Their land was expropriated for the benefit of European settlers. Scores of tribes were forced to flee the country. Other were displaced or decimated.
  • Algeria was considered by the French administration as a province, part of metropolitan France. For more than a century Algeria was banned.
  • In 1954 Algerians were led to a final fight with their colonizer. It took 7 years of war that left more tan a million of victims and extreme damage in the country.
  • A killer 7 year war, France has been calling “events”. France, the country of human rights and freedom, dare not to recognize more than a century of crimes and systematic genocides committed by its colonial army in Algeria.
  • However the French parliament approved a law that glorifies colonization and speaks about its “merits”.
