Abdelkader Messahel: “Algeria Is Committed To Libya Stability”

Foreign Minister, Abdelkader Messahel, held talks with his Egyptian counterpart, Sameh Shukri, and the UN Special Envoy to Libya Ghassane Salama on the sidelines of their participation in the annual Sir Bani Yas Forum in the UAE.

A statement from the Foreign Ministry said, on Sunday, that the Minister Abdelkader Messahel, who is participating in the Sir Bani Yas Forum, that is organized by the United Arab Emirates in Abu Dhabi from 3 to 5 November, met on the sidelines of the forum, with his counterparts from the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Egypt, Tanzania and Rwanda, in addition to the General Secretary of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Abu El Ghit, and the Special Representatives of the General Secretary of the United Nations to Libya, Ghassan Salama, and the Yaman representative, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed.

In the same context, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry presented in a statement details of Shukri’s meeting with Messahel, according to the ministry’s official Facebook page, as the adviser, Ahmed Abu El Ghit, spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, said that Ministers of Algeria and Egypt discussed the security and political situation in Libya confirming the importance of supporting the efforts of the UN envoy to Libya, and the agreement that will be held by the tripartite mechanism of the Libyan neighbors this month in Cairo, to support efforts to achieve security and stability in the country.

The forum, which is being held in Abu Dhabi, is attended by several Foreign Ministers and senior officials of the regional and international organizations that address the problems that are related to international peace and security, especially the Libyan crisis, the Gulf crisis and the Yemeni issue.

On this occasion, Messahel told the UN official that “Algeria is committed to the stability of Libya and to support the political process in this country”.

Previously, the UN envoy to Libya, Ghassane Salama, praised in an interview with the last number of the French magazine “Jeune Afrique” the role of Algeria, Egypt and Tunisia in resolving the Libyan crisis, and said: “They fear what is happening in Libya, as Tunisia, Algeria and Egypt spend money to protect their borders from All kinds of illegal trade, and fear that terrorism will take root in Libya”.

Messahel also discussed with his Emirati counterpart, Sheikh Abdullah Al Nahyan, who discussed bilateral cooperation, ways and means of strengthening it with many regional and international issues as well.

The Foreign Minister expressed his interest in such meetings, which contribute to a greater understanding of the major challenges that are facing the international community and to achieve greater harmony on the ways and means of ensuring them.

He also discussed with his Jordanian counterpart, Ayman Safadi, the “status of bilateral relationships and preparations for the upcoming session of the joint committee for cooperation between the two countries”.

Messahel met with his Rwandan counterpart, Louise Muschikiwabo, and discussed bilateral relationships and the prospects for enhancing them in various fields.

Talks between the two sides also dealt with “the upcoming elections of the AU agenda and the ministerial meeting of the United States with African countries on regional security and partnership in the economic and trade fields that is expected on November 17 in Washington”.
