Increasing terrorist threat has not declined on the international level, and the number of terrorist groups is multiplying”, Minister Delegate in charge of Maghreb and African Affairs, Abdelkader Messahel said.
“Terrorist groups gain new spaces, and are now occupying the territories.”
In his speech at the opening session of the General Assembly for the work group, which is dedicated to strengthening the fight against terrorism in the Sahel region, which is headed equally by Algeria and Canada, with the participation of about 30 countries and international organizations, Messahel explained; “Terrorists impose their violence and barbarism on the civilian population. They are able to recruit people and a lot of money, and get arms as easily as they use modern information technologies, taking advantage of the weakness of some countries, and set aside the international cooperation.”
“Each country is a potential target of the terrorist threat and criminal acts, and terrorist groups do not exclude anyone. Terrorism is evolving in situations of conflict and chaos. Effective fight of this scourge required finding political solutions to the conflicts that are exploited in their favor.”
“Threat in the Sahel region is large and the expanded scope of the atrocities that are committed by the Boko Haram (terrorist group), raised concern. This threat affects the security and stability of many countries. Crimes that are committed by Boko Haram exacerbate the risk that is posed by terrorist groups that are active in the region.”
Global Forum for Counter-terrorism consists of a Coordination Committee, and six working groups, and concerned mainly with issues of criminal justice and the rule of law in counter terrorism, and combating violent extremism, as it also includes two working groups, one of them is dedicated to the Sahel region and the other one to the Horn of Africa.
The meeting, which is part of the activities of the Global Forum for Combating Terrorism, which was launched in 2011, will engage in assessing the security situation in the Sahel region, and studying the ways of cooperation in the framework of this forum, as participants at the third meeting, which is led by Algeria and Canada, will discuss the issues that are related to combating the financing of terrorism and drying sources of its funding.
