“The other May†screened for the first time in Algiers.

The French movie maker born to Algerian origins Yasmine Addi yesterday premiered for the media professionals here ion Algiers her documentary film “ The other 8 May†which recounts the French military genocide on innocent civilians during the demonstrations that took place in the provinces of Setif, Guelma and Kherrata in May8,1945 while thousands took to the streets to celebrate the end of the World War II.

The documentary produced by the French first channel relates living testimonies of people jailed for 17 years as well as the one given by the French historian Pascal Blanchard. The movie also hints to the international mood that coincided with the sad events in the wake of the WWII and the creation of the United Nations organization.

But the film didn’t mention the 45000 dead civilians savagely killed by the colonial forces at that time, nor some Algerian historians’ truths in addition to writings made by prominent French historians.

The director replied that the number of the victims was uncertain because of the lack of written evidences, adding that the French atrocities in the direction of innocent Algerian civilians were tremendous.

She went on saying that her aims was to show the other side of May 8 1945, the side hidden by and censored by the French government, which is not part of the celebrations held each year to commemorate their victory over Nazism.
