AFCON 2025 Qualifiers: Mahrez, Aouar Won’t Play Against Liberia
On Saturday afternoon, the Algerian Football Federation announced that Riyad Mahrez and Houssem Aouar won’t play the Fennecs’ match against Liberia.
The match will be held on Tuesday evening, September 10, in Liberia, as part of the second round of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
President Walid Sadi’s office said that Algeria’s football coach Vladimir Petkovic allowed winger Riyad Mahrez and midfielder Houssem Aouar to leave the Fennecs training camp on Saturday afternoon.
The Algerian Football Federation explained why they were absent as a “medical order”, without providing precise explanations.
Petkovic now has 22 players in his possession, after calling up 26, so he replaced Hicham Boudaoui with Ahmed Kendouci and vacated the positions of Rayan Ait Nouri, Mohammed Amoura, Riyad Mahrez and Houssem Aouar.
