African Union: Morocco will come back humiliated
Sahrawi Ambassador to Algiers Bouchraia Hamoudi Beyoune Wednesday said Morocco’s wish to join the African Union is a failure. “It left the continent 34 years ago. Now, it comes back humiliated. »
“The African Union’s resolutions are clear. Problems can only be solved through peaceful means. The African Union’s Charter can not be changed. Analyses given by Morocco are just imaginary,” the Sahrawi diplomat told a press conference in Algiers.
Speaking about Morocco’s allegations that it is supported by 28 African nations, the Ambassador said “Rabat tried to get into the Union during the African Summit held in Rwanda last summer. Yet, the Union said access should be done in an official way. State members do not want to destroy what the Union had built, 17 years ago.”
He evoked what happened during the last Arab-African Summit in Equatorial Guinea. Morocco’s African allies refused to support it as Rabat boycotted proceedings due to the Polisario Front’s presence.
Algeria’s former ambassador to Spain Abdelaziz Rehabi said the Western Sahara issue is behind blocked relations between Morocco and Algeria and the frozen Maghrebin Union.
“No nation in the world recognizes Morocco’s sovereignty in the Sahrawi territory,” he added.
Speaking about Morocco’s adherence to the African Union, Rehabi said “it is a triumph for the Sahrawi fight and an acknowledgment of borders which existed before the colonization.”
Ironically speaking he added that “Southern Sudan joined the African Union within three days. Morocco has called for adhering to the Union for a year. There may be risks following this adherence. It may plan to cause a failure in the Union.”
Academic Amari Tahar said the Zionist entity also wants to join the Union as an observer member.
“Morocco’s adherence is in contradictions with the African Union’s bases. Rabat does not respect inherited borders. The conflict management can threaten peace and security,” he added.
