Aid El Adha: 3.5 million sheep will be sacrificed in Algeria at a cost of 100 billion dinars

The General Union of Algerian traders and craftsmen (UGCAA) has recorded a hike in the price of sheep in various parts of Algeria at the onset of the religious feast of Aid El Adha.

• The UGCAA spokesman, Hadj Tahar Boulenouar, who was Monday the guest of Echorouk’s Forum said that the number of sheep to be sacrificed on this occasion would reach about 3.5 million heads.

• He said that the venal speculators were behind the steep hike in the price of sheep stressing that this scenario was being repeated each year.

• He indicated that the price of a single sheep could reach up to 50 thousand dinars owing to unbridled speculation practices.

• He said that half of Algerian citizens would not sacrifice sheep on this festive occasion on account of the deterioration of their purchasing power.

• According to the UGCAA spokesman, the 2011 meat imports by Algeria have exceeded 250 million dollars and he pointed to the imperious necessity for the public authorities to shore up sheep and cattle breeding through incentive measures in favour of breeders in order to curtail the colossal expenses devoted to annual meat imports.
