Algeria 3-1 Rwanda: “The Greens edge closer to the 2010 World Cup”

Algeria's 3-1 win over Rwanda was most grueling and painstaking on Sunday night at the Tchaker stadium of Blida as part of the combined qualifying race for the 2010 World cup and Africa cup of nations' competitions.

  • Despite a disastrous refereeing, the Greens succeeded in scoring twice in the first half of the game after sustaining an unexpected Rwandan goal after a corner granted to the Rwandan team.
  • The scoreline in the first half should have been in principle 3 goals to 1 for the benefit of the Algeria squad if the dismal referee did not refuse a bona-fide goal for the Fennecs as everybody in the stadium and the TV viewers alike saw clearly the ball go well inside the net of the Rwandan team except him.
  • The Algerian side was dismayed and flabbergasted at such a blatant and grave blunder on the part of the referee.
  • In spite of this mishap, the Algerian players, behaved as genuine professionals and went again on the offensive in the second half but did not unfortunately succeed in scoring again on account of a lack of clear-sightedness and precision.
  • However, the Greens’ unflagging efforts finally bore fruit in the last minute of additional time with a goal superbly scored on penalty by midfielder Karim Ziani.
  • Suddenly becoming less “complacent” towards the Rwandan squad, the referee whistled this penalty-kick of “hope” in favour of the Fennecs, following a glaring foul committed against striker Karim Matmour by 2 Rwandan defenders in the 18 yards.
  • The scoring should have been much heavier if the Algerian strikers did not miss several golden opportunities to score especially in the first half hour of the match.
  • All in all, the Fennec’s 3-1 victory on Sunday over Rwanda was difficult but well deserved on all accounts.
  • This most precious victory will allow them to brace up for the last qualifier versus Egypt on November 14th in Cairo in high spirits and with the resolute will to clinch the much-coveted qualifying ticket for the 2010 World cup competition to the boundless delight of all the Algerian people.
